A Chinese human rights group and a friend say authorities have detained Guo Feixiong, a leader of the country’s loose New Citizens campaign to promote democratic rights.

Journalist Xiao Shu said Saturday that a sister of Guo, whose real name is Yang Maodong, was notified by the Tianhe branch of the Guangzhou police in southern China that Guo was detained on Aug. 8 on the charge of disrupting public order.

The Chinese Human Rights Defenders also reported Guo’s detention on Saturday. A woman at a local police office referred questions to a detention center, but the detention center refused to comment.

Guo’s detention came weeks after Xu Zhiyong, another leading figure of the New Citizens movement, was detained on the same charge in Beijing.
