Five women are being criminally detained by Chinese authorities after being suspected of “picking quarrels and creating a disturbance”.

The women are known for campaigning for the LGBT community and women’s rights, and were apparently detained after authorities discovered they were planning on highlighting sexual harassment on International Womens Day.

The scandal of it all.

Nine women in total were seized in the run-up to International Women’s Day on March 8th across Beijing, Guangzhou and Hangzhou, although four have now been released.

According to the Chinese Human Rights Defenders network, the women being held are 25-year-old Li Maizi; Zheng Churan, also 25; 30-year-old Wu Rongrong, Wei Tingting, 27; and Wang Man. All of the women have previous involvement in women’s rights campaigning and LGBT activism.
