  • Chinese billionaire Sun Dawu has been sentenced to 18 years in prison on various charges.Earlier, advocacy group Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) had said that it was a blatant attempt to punish Dawu for his support of human rights.

The outspoken Chinese billionaire Sun Dawu was sentenced to 18 years in prison on charges ranging from causing trouble to illegal fundraising on 28 July. He was also fined 3.11 million yuan ($480,000) as part of his sentence. Latest reports also revealed that his two sons and two brothers were also sentenced to prison terms ranging from 18 months to 12 years by the Gaobeidian People’s Court.

According to a statement posted by the court, Dawu was charged for “picking quarrels and provoking troubles”. The business tycoon, who runs one of China’s largest private agricultural businesses in the northern province of Hebei, was arrested in March this year along with 20 relatives and business associates over a land dispute with a government-run farm.
